![]() The Chevy Volt, on the other hand, owed its manufacturing cost to more than just the battery. By 2021, the Chevy Bolt EV's battery cost of $100 per kWh would save GM nearly $2,000 in manufacturing costs, despite being projected to be more capable in terms of both energy and charging speeds. However, with battery prices projected to fall well below $100 per kWh in the near future and GM's moving electronic component manufacturing facility in Hazel Park, MI, the Bolt EV's pathway to profitability was obvious. That means that, at the leaked $145 per kWh price that GM was paying LG for battery cells, the Chevy Bolt EV's battery alone represented more than one third of the total cost to build the Bolt EV. According to a UBS tear-down report of the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV, it cost GM $28,700 in parts and labor to build. Even if the ZEV credits end completely, the only thing keeping the Bolt EV from being highly profitable was battery prices. The Chevy Volt Offered No Pathway to ProfitabilityĪn all-electric car like the Chevrolet Bolt EV has a clear path to profitability. What is more, while there was a clear pathway to profitability for the Bolt EV however, the same could not be said for the Volt. With the release of Chevrolet Bolt EV, which would be responsible for earning the lion's share of GM's ZEV credits, the Volt program in the United States became very hard to justify. Essentially, as ZEV requirements become stricter, the financial benefits GM sees from building PHEVs decreases. However, even if Corporate Average Fleet Economy (CAFE) standards and ZEV credit system remain in place (which is no longer even certain), a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) such as the Volt provides GM with increasingly fewer ZEV credits over time. The only thing that was saving the Volt from what would have normally been an easy decision to cancel the program were the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) credits that offset GM's cost for building the Volt. These complicated supply chains made it difficult to build Volts profitably, and as a low-volume, low-margin vehicle, it was destined for the chopping block. The Chevrolet Volt is extremely complex and expensive to build, and its supply chain looked like someone threw a pile of spaghetti noodles onto a map of Michigan that spilled off onto the rest of the Midwest. Through that lens, maintaining the Volt and Voltec programs made absolutely no sense. Regardless of their affinity for a brand, concept, or vehicle, they have to demonstrate to their investors either immediate profits or – at the very least – a pathway to profitability. While GM is often painted as an evil corporation bent on the destruction of humanity, the reality is that they are a profit-driven company that owes primary allegiance to its investors. However, I will also explain what GM did wrong by cancelling the Volt program in the way they did and what they could have (and should have) done differently. In this story, I will explain why GM was right to end the Volt program, their reasons for not applying the Voltec powertrain to other platforms, and the reasons the electric vehicle community shouldn't be concerned about GM "killing" their electric cars. However, from an objective viewpoint, GM's decision to cancel the Volt and the Voltec program was correct. These accusations gained additional traction thanks to GM's not having an immediate, plug-in replacement for the Volt. Thanks to a fervent and vocal anti-GM enclave of the EV community, the Volt's cancellation prompted renewed claims that GM was – once again – attempting to "kill" the electric car. Variety of products that help protect your investment. As a Chevy Volt owner for over seven years, I completely understand why many Volt owners are upset at the news that GM was cancelling the Volt and not pursuing any other Voltec-based vehicle platforms. The Brusheez comes as a set, with a bulky brush stand and attached sand timer (the brush itself doesn’t have a built-in timer). We found that the Quip and Sonicare brush heads attached more securely, because you have to physically jam the brush head onto the brush body. Additionally, if you attach the head but forget to give it a quarter turn, it can pop off easily. To attach and detach it, you give the brush head a quarter turn, but it was easy to accidentally turn the brush head while using it, which frees the head to pop off. The Brusheez brush head can also pop off easily. But our 3-year-old tester managed to break the brush head completely during normal use (it’s likely she bit down slightly on the head, which is “normal use” for that age). The Brusheez Kid’s Electronic Toothbrush Set, which runs on two AA batteries, hit many of the marks: It’s smaller than an adult brush and comes with a kid-sized rotating brush head that worked well for our young testers. And even if you prefer to purchase brush heads à la carte and pay $10 for shipping, as long as you buy at least three at a time, the cost per brush head is still less than that of the Sonicare (and it drops further the more brush heads you buy at once). ![]() One Wirecutter staffer, whose two kids use Quip toothbrushes, said that signing up to receive new brush heads every three months has been a convenient way to remember to replace them in a timely manner. If you want to purchase a replacement head without subscribing, you’ll pay $5 per brush head, plus $10 flat-rate shipping-objectively not a good deal unless you buy in bulk. Quip incentivizes signing up for a “refill plan” to automatically receive a new brush head every three months: The subscription costs $5, ships for free, and includes a new AAA battery. While standard (adult-sized) replacement Quip brush heads are now available in some stores, the only way to obtain replacement heads for the Quip Kids is by ordering from the company’s website. But we think this is a worthwhile trade-off, especially for an introductory toothbrush with powered assist. The Quip Kids brush runs on replaceable batteries, instead of recharging on a base unit. We also like that the Quip Kids comes in simple, solid colors, which we think give the brush wider appeal than those that come only in limited character or cartoon themes. The built-in, two-minute timer helps with encouraging kids to brush for the amount of time recommended by leading dental associations. The Quip Kids toothbrush is also one of the most affordable electric toothbrushes we tested (replacement brush heads are about $5 apiece, if you sign up to receive a new brush head every three months). ![]() This is the quietest, lightest, and-importantly-gentlest brush we’ve tested, and it impressed our kid testers, who had various levels of experience with using an electric toothbrush. These make it easier for young kids (or adults) to manipulate the brush and reach small spaces in the back of the mouth. ![]() ![]() The AAA-battery-operated, vibrating Quip Kids toothbrush has the primary features our experts said a children’s brush needs: a smaller brush head and handle. Love to the Corps.įirst off I just want to try and explain (to the best of my knowledge) why the movie (which is a form of documentary and not an entire chronicling or a "How-To Guide" of basic Marine Corps training) had ended up not including certain things as such. I don't recall bickering about this in Iraq. This *beep* about which side is better than which is utter nonsense. So, in understanding this, we should see that there is no way in hell anyone would know what it's like to have gone through bootcamp in San Diego unless they've been there, and also that we should not open our mouths unless it is proven that we are knowledgeable about the likes in the first place. It is also my understanding, from my own experience, that no matter how good the drill instructors, venue (be it Diego or PI), although our Corps is among the best in the world, there are also those who have proven to be completely inefficient. Basically, nobody will ever know what it's like to be a Marine or combat veteran until they experience it themselves. Especially, as a combat veteran, is it ever so difficult to let others into the hearts and minds of those who served overseas in combat. Marines have the hard task of not truly being able to convey what it's really like in Marine Corps bootcamp, especially to civilians or members of other services who casually downplay what we've been through. How about showing MCMAP, classes, more drill, the pit, and the Crucible?! There are some parts that I enjoyed, however, they just don't make up for the rest of the movie. I don't want to drop $25 on an movie to watch recruits CLEANING! Most of the footage in the movie is absolutely worthless and doesn't give you an idea of any of the TRAINING involved. I don't want to watch the freaking guide and squad leaders spend 15 minutes trying to solve the mystery of the dirty pisser. I don't care about the birds flying in unison over the platoon, show the actual platoon drilling. I actually became quite pissed off a few times throughout the movie when the shot would just sit on some mundane detail for what seemed like minutes at a time. With an open ticket to film recruit training and display it without narration, bias, or interruption I'm amazed that Brumley couldn't have found more to present to the public than recruits cleaning for almost half of the film. ![]() Moreover, for some types of records, a number of attributes (e.g., color, price per unit, size) may need to be stored while others may not (weight, price per pound, date of production, etc). Each scrum sprint may change the number of attributes and their types. Fast application development drives demand for continued correction in data structures. And because columns can be queried, indexed, and joined, JSONB provides a significant performance improvement over JSON. Flexible schemas enable developers to launch new projects faster. The key capabilities of JSONB include simpler, flexible schema design, faster queries, and support for indexing. This is where JSONB shines because it stores the pre-computed result of data aggregation, which enables fast access.Ĭurrent capabilities of PostgreSQL with JSONB ![]() In this architecture, every microservice exists to answer a known question (e.g., display some product with all its metadata, etc.), which makes it essential to have fast access to known aggregated data. While the ability to query both structured and unstructured data is the biggest draw of JSONB in PostgreSQL, the availability of JSONB also coincided with the surge of interest in microservices architecture. Once JSONB was made available in PostgreSQL v9.4 in 2014, the popularity of the database grew significantly. Since the name JSON was already used for features in Postgres, we decided to use JSONB, for “JSON Binary,” as the name. So in 2013, we began working on what we called Native HStore with array and nesting support, and in 2014, we started work on adding a binary storage native data structure and an application HStore structure. However, no operations were enabled because at that time, the developers did not believe this was necessary. In 2012, limited features of JSON were enabled in Postgres, including storage and organization. In 2006, these features were officially committed in PostgreSQL as an extension. This provided schema flexibility, which quickly became popular among users. In 2003, we implemented HStore to store key-value pairs in a binary format. In 2000, while working on, a major Russian portal, I and others began implementing text arrays and full-text search within PostgreSQL. Such features enable businesses to accomplish more tasks using a single database solution, introducing more innovation more quickly while conserving development resources and putting less pressure on teams to manage security for multiple applications.Ī brief history of bringing JSON and JSONB into PostgreSQL Among its benefits are a flexible schema to help businesses ramp up new projects quickly and compression to reduce overhead and increase performance. JSONB is now the most popular supported data type driving adoption of Postgres. JSONB, a data type exclusive to PostgreSQL, is an evolution of JSON that stores the text-based data in binary form, making the applications that access the unstructured data both faster and more efficient. JSON is a file format and data interchange format that enables applications to store and analyze text-based documents. In this confusing environment, the adoption of one particular open source database, PostgreSQL, is growing rapidly based on its ability to handle both structured and unstructured data.Ī relational, or SQL, database system with more than 30 years of active development history, PostgreSQL is known for reliability, a strong feature set, and great performance. ![]() And we know that companies today tend to rely on a variety of on-premises and cloud-based databases and services to make the best use of their data.
